20030101 (Wednesday) Happy New Year!, West Hollywood
20030102 (Thursday) Stairwell, Beverly Hills
Part of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
I think.
20030103 (Friday) Computer Monitors, Santa Monica
They seem like trash, but as they were inside the garage, they might not have been.
20030104 (Saturday) The Two Towers, Eagle Rock
These things are HUGE.
You can see them for miles around.
20030105 (Sunday) Main Street At Night, Disneyland, Anaheim
Horribly underexposed picture of the lights on Main Street, Disneyland at dusk.
20030106 (Monday) Birdie, Santa Monica
For the first time, I noticed this scratched into a patch of cement that I walk past almost every day.
20030107 (Tuesday) Church, Santa Monica
For some reason, this reminds me of that They Might Be Giants cover.
Even though it looks nothing like it.
I guess it's closer to that one Chemical Brothers cover, right?
Anyone want to buy a photo for an album cover?
20030108 (Wednesday) Flat Tire, Santa Monica
I've had a slow leak in this tire for years.
Then, for a few weeks, it was kind of a medium leak.
Today it decided to become a fast leak.
20030109 (Thursday) Lamp, Santa Monica
After I snapped this picture and began walking away, a security guard tried to stop me.
Really.
For taking a picture of a lamp.
20030110 (Friday) Pillow, Santa Monica
More interesting junk from the alleys of Santa Monica by the sea.
Well, OK, it's not all that interesting, but a pillow laying in the middle of the alley did catch my attention.
20030111 (Saturday) Sleepy Tree, Glendale
Wake up, sleepyhead!
20030112 (Sunday) Recycling Is Now Easier Than Ever, West Hollywood
I found this laying in the hollow of a couch frame abandoned on the sidewalk.
Apparently, we Americans have difficulty with the concept of irony.
Does this count?
20030113 (Monday) Surf Board, Santa Monica
I would never have thought about it, but this seems a perfectly reasonable storage place for a surf board.
20030114 (Tuesday) Recycling Bins, Santa Monica
When I see things like this, I'm sure that someone has a sense of humor.
These bins were lined up so perfectly, so far from the curb, that it must have been intentional.
20030115 (Wednesday) Drink, Los Angeles
I hate the rain.
Well, I don't actually hate the rain itself.
Rain is a good thing, particularly when you live in a desert.
I like being inside, listening to the rain fall outside.
I hate being outside, listening to the rain fall on me.
On rainy days, I am less than motivated to go looking for a photo.
Fortunately, this cup presented itself in the dry car port.
Even more fortunately, I like the way the picture turned out.
With the completely flat lighting, it has a certain surreal quality.
20030116 (Thursday) MIKE CD, Santa Monica
That is a John Hiatt CD, by the way.
20030117 (Friday) Broken Hearts, Santa Monica
Someone apparently dropped a box of store-brand heart-shaped cookies on the ground and did not bother to pick it up.
I thought they were very dramatically strewn on the ground.
20030118 (Saturday) Do Not Hump, Travel Town, Los Angeles
It's a railroading term. You and your sick mind.
20030119 (Sunday) Peacock, Huntington Gardens, Pasadena
There are wild peacocks running around the Huntington Gardens. Mostly, they seem to hang out in front of the visitors center.
While on the whole they do not seem terribly shy around humans, I found this one was hiding in the bushes.
20030120 (Monday) Glass Pyramid, Santa Monica
Okay, it doesn't much look like a pyramid in this picture, but that's the way it looked in person.
I think this was a car window that had been shattered and fallen out in this carport.
The way it landed, folded over like a fortune cookie, made it look like a little pyramid of broken glass.
20030121 (Tuesday) Alphabet Cookies, Santa Monica
When I tell people I like wandering around in alleys, they look at me like I am nuts.
Alleys are necessary evils, to be tolerated, not enjoyed, seems to be their thinking.
But I like it when I find things like this, and it happens far more often in alleys.
Why is this half-full jug of alphabet cookies sitting on top of this recycling bin?
Did someone not want them anymore? Did they feel guilty throwing them away when maybe a homeless person might find them nourishing?
Was someone walking down the alley, and suddenly got sick of their alphabet cookies, but were too lazy to wander to the nearest dumpster?
Were pirates involved? Did they get frustrated not being able to read any letters other than 'Y', 'A', and 'R'?
I didn't try the cookies, so I don't know if they are any good. But they're in the shape of letters! They can't be that awful!
20030122 (Wednesday) Tennis Balls And Hanger, Santa Monica
Another puzzling scenario.
20030123 (Thursday) Plastic Toy Thing???, Santa Monica
Any ideas what this thing is?
Sorry it's so blurry.
20030124 (Friday) Broken Cone, Santa Monica
Despite what you may have seen in video games, safety cones do not pop up and away from the car when you hit them.
Instead, this is what happens.
Don't try this at home.
20030125 (Saturday) Emser Tile, West Hollywood
Every time I look at this sign, I assume it is broken, or missing something.
Like it should say "Emerson Tile".
But "Emser" is indeed the name of the company.
20030126 (Sunday) House On Hollywood Hill, Hollywood
This is the only problem I have with the Holga camera. The lens is a bit wider than normal, which normally leads to some interesting effects, and it helps with the focus a bit.
But sometimes I see something interesting, like this house on top of a hill in Hollywood, and take its picture only to find that there is so much extraneous stuff in the frame that you can't see the intended subject.
Of course, you can see the gas prices on the corner of Fairfax and Sunset on this particular Super Bowl Sunday.
Which is so terribly important.
20030127 (Monday) Dump No Rubbish, Santa Monica
Yes, you can get six months in jail for dumping filthy water in Santa Monica.
These signs went up along the sidewalk next to the dumpsters near work after a string of days in which you couldn't see the sidewalk for all the garbage on it.
The dumpsters are just on the street, and there are recycling dumpsters there, too. Most people drive up, neatly deposit their newspapers and bottles and drive away.
But some people insist on putting their unwanted stuff on the ground next to the dumpsters. Sometimes the dumpsters are full. Sometimes it's homeless people going through the dumpsters throwing stuff aside to get it out of their way (I have been very nearly brained with empty bottles being thrown out by one such person).
The level of garbage being dumped has gone down, but there is still plenty of it. Which is good because that is where a good percentage of my photos come from.
20030128 (Tuesday) Cork Board, Santa Monica
An example of the supposedly prohibited dumping which still occurs.
Though this is, strictly speaking, not next to the dumpsters but rather around the corner.
20030129 (Wednesday) Caution Tape, Santa Monica
This picture is a little dark. Sorry. I'm not even sure why I took it anymore.
20030130 (Thursday) Training Wheels, Los Angeles
People leave the most amazing trash near the dumpsters.
20030131 (Friday) No More 500, Santa Monica
I don't what this means. I like the idea of outlawing certain numbers, though. No more 500! Let's also get rid of every number starting with 7.
