20021101 (Friday) Fox Plaza, Century City
As you can see, Alan Rickman did not blow it up.
20021102 (Saturday) Truck Race, Fontana
Whoever came up with the idea of racing pickup trucks was either demented or deserves a medal.
These races are always so much fun to watch.
But these guys must be crazy, driving 180 mph in a pickup truck.
20021103 (Sunday) California Speedway, Fontana
It's a big track, with big grandstands.
This was the day of the CART race, and the weather was gorgeous, unlike the last two years where rain either shortened or delayed the race.
20021104 (Monday) Model, Santa Monica
I think it's one of the California missions.
When I was in grade school, we all had to build models of one of the missions. Or at least our parents did. Most looked something like this.
Cardboard was a popular material. Sugarcubes worked well, but one had to be careful because between the time you turned in your project and it was graded, there would be structural damage from people eating the sugarcubes. Glue and all.
This assignment would be more than a little controversial today, given all the bad press that Junipero Serra has gotten for building said missions. So maybe it's something else.
As for why it was abandoned on this hedge, I offer no speculation.
20021105 (Tuesday) R.R. Graffiti, Santa Monica
This is the sound of me completely out of ideas for a picture of the day.
This bit of graffiti showed up some time ago and I was resisting taking its picture because it's not as transitory as I want these pictures to be.
But the picture turned out well anyhow.
20021106 (Wednesday) God Is Your Copilot, Santa Monica
O.K., I shouldn't say anything, but this really bothers me.
I'm not especially religious or anti-religious, and I get the whole "God is my copilot" thing.
But while that is all about letting religion guide and inform your actions, doesn't this sort of imply total surrender of everything, including free will?
I thought the whole point of the flood and Noah was to underscore the idea of free will and the non-interference of God. That human beings have to choose for themselves and do good of their own volition.
I'm probably making too much of this. This church usually tries to be humorous with their sign.
20021107 (Thursday) The Time When Dinosaurs Had Christmas Trees... Made Of Ice!, Santa Monica
Ignoring for the moment that it went up in EARLY NOVEMBER, this is a rather fun re-dress of the topiary dinosaurs on the Third Street Promenade for the season.
20021108 (Friday) Somebody Left The Chair Out In The Rain, Los Angeles
It's hard to tell that it had rained overnight in this photo.
But it did.
Really.
20021109 (Saturday) Castle For Lease, Burbank
O.K., not really a castle.
But it's got that really cool turret - what else could you want?
20021110 (Sunday) Jack Skellington, Anaheim
For the second year, Disneyland has decorated the Haunted Mansion with a Nightmare Before Christmas theme.
If you live anywhere near Disneyland, I strongly recommend you see the ride this way before they take it all down again. It is way cool, and shows that when they want to, Disney can still build an amazing amusement park ride.
20021111 (Monday) Three, Los Angeles
So the papa shelving unit says, "My space is too big".
And the mama shelving unit says, "My space is too small".
And the baby shelving unit says, "My space is just right".
20021112 (Tuesday) Winona, Los Angeles
And the funny thing is I happened to have some Fuji film in the camera this day.
20021113 (Wednesdsy) UFOs!, Los Angeles
Seriously - I saw this formation of UFOs when I was driving on the freeway.
Why don't you believe me?
20021114 (Thursday) Big Mac Attack, Santa Monica
Believe it or not, I had another UFO photo for the day, but it didn't turn out so well.
So you get this.
20021115 (Friday) 4FVM187, Santa Monica
Anyone missing a license plate?
20021116 (Saturday) Construction, Pasadena
I hope they are repairing the building, and not tearing it down.
20021117 (Sunday) It Is Against The Law To Leave Animal Droppings, Los Angeles
I have never seen any animal poop along this fence, so I'm not quite sure why they're complaining.
20021118 (Monday) Roof, Santa Monica
At the time I snapped this, I was wishing that I had black and white film in the camera, as there is no color here to take advantage of.
But looking at the picture, I think this is exactly the kind of image that this color film handles very well in the Holga.
All-white images in bright sunlight seem to exaggerate the vignetting effect of the cheap lens, and the color gives the image a glow that just would not be there in black and white.
Reminds me of an earlier entry.
20021119 (Tuesday) Sale 3124 Broadway, Santa Monica
I like the dollar sign, added apparently as an afterthought. Just in case you weren't aware of which currency was acceptable.
20021120 (Wednesday) Bricks, Santa Monica
Neatly crated up and ready to be hauled away.
20021121 (Thursday) Sky, Santa Monica
Normally, I never get good shots of the sky. But still I try, and on one or two occasions, this being one of them, I have ended up with something interesting.
20021122 (Friday) Tire, Santa Monica
I'd ask if anyone needed a tire, but it disappeared the next day.
20021123 (Saturday) Giant "B", Burbank
I apologize profusely for this photo. It sucks.
There is a hillside in Burbank that has a giant white "B" on it.
Just pretend you can see it in this photo.
Thanks for your cooperation.
20021124 (Sunday) Furniture Dollies, Los Angeles
I'd ask if anyone needed a furniture dolly, but they're chained up so it wouldn't do you any good.
Unless you had some bolt cutters.
20021125 (Monday) Do Not Horn, Santa Monica
So, I guess it's now acceptable to take any noun and turn it into a verb at your whim.
I'm seeing this more and more lately.
And this is not the only place that has this exact sign!
20021126 (Tuesday) Model 4400, Santa Monica
I don't know why I took this photo.
The nameplate on the box amused me at the time, I guess.
I apologize for making you look at it now.
20021127 (Wednesday) Double Exposure, I-15/Las Vegas, Nevada
One of the wonderful things about using a cheap plastic camera is the mistakes it encourages you to make.
And sometimes those mistakes add some interest to otherwise boring pictures.
Today's photo is of the traffic on the way to Las Vegas, Nevada. But I forgot to advance the film, and took a picture from the hotel room window the next morning over it.
So maybe this should count as two pictures.
20021128 (Thursday) New York, New York, Las Vegas, Nevada
No double exposure to lively up this typical tourist photo.
20021129 (Friday) The Disney Store, Las Vegas, Nevada
And this is an intentional double-expsosure.
I wanted to take a picture of the facade of the Disney Store in the Forum Shops at Caesar's Palace, but it's awfully dark in there.
As easy as it is to accidentally take a double exposure, it is just as easy to do it intentionally to "build up" an exposure.
Though there's no guarantee that the camera did not move between exposures.
20021130 (Saturday) MGM-Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada
Yes, that is a sign advertising Rick Springfield in a musical.
